The main functions under the fishery sector can be mentioned as bellow.
Depositing fingerlings in reservoirs and seasonal tanks in SP.
According to an annual plan prepared by the ministry with the support of the National Aquaculture Development Authority of Sri Lanka (NAQDA), the ministry buy fries and fingerlings from the NAQDA and private aquaculture pond owners. Those fries and fingerlings deposit in the reservoirs and tanks under the supervision and technical assistant of the NAQDA. There are fisheries societies established with each reservoirs and tanks. They are in concern with this procedures in order to get it success.
Empowering Fisheries Societies in SP. In order to empower the fisheries societies in SP, several projects are implemented by the ministry. Distribution of fishing gears is one of them. At the beginning of the every year the needs of fishing gear of the fisheries societies are called by the ministry. As per the allocation for fishery sector, the ministry provides fishing gears to fulfill the needs of the fisheries societies. Mainly fishing nets, canoes, fish storage boxes, GPS equipment are provided by the ministry.
In addition to provision of fishing gears, some other equipment to strength those fisheries societies are distributed by the ministry as well. Especially for the welfare activities of those societies, plastic chairs, LED flashers, Gas stoves, etc are distributed by the ministry.
Rest of these provisions, fish boxes for fishermen are provided in individual basis.
Training facilities on ornamental fish industry.

There are number of people who are willing to join ornamental fishery industry and many people who are already in the ornamental fishery industry. The ministry provides training facilities for both beneficiaries to develop their business at the ornamental fish breeding & training center at Rambadagalla, Kurunegala.
Training facilities for women in fisheries societies.
The ministry provides the training facilities for the women beneficiaries in the fisheries societies on value added fish products (making Maldives fish), sawing etc. As per the requests of the fisheries societies, ministry provides the relevant trainings for them.
Provide sanitary facilities for fisheries families with 50% of beneficiary contribution.
Every year the ministry call applications from low income families to provide sanitary facilities. (Toilets & drinking water) When considering the supplying of drinking water, the beneficiary should contribute the half of the total estimate given by the National water supply board. The other half of the estimate is provided by the ministry. The ministry also provides the half (Rs. 40,000/-) of the total estimate of construction of a toilet. Beneficiaries should contribute the other half of the estimate as Rs. 40,000/-)
